Echoo - Music App for Gen Z
Role
UX/UI Designer
Timeframe
4 Weeks
Redesigning the conversion journey of a music streaming app to introduce a transparent premium experience.

Overview
Echoo is a music streaming startup that successfully built a large free user base. However, the product struggled to convert free listeners into paid subscribers.
The goal of this project was to redesign the premium conversion experience in a way that encourages users to upgrade without harming the trust and engagement already built with the free product.
Instead of relying on aggressive paywalls or intrusive ads, the redesign focuses on transparency, contextual value, and low commitment entry points for users.
The Problem
Most music streaming apps rely on friction — such as frequent ads or feature restrictions — to push users towards premium subscriptions.
While effective for monetization, this approach often leads to frustration and weakens trust with users.
Echoo faced a different challenge.
Because the free version of the app was already highly enjoyable, users had little motivation to upgrade. The conversion journey was passive, and subscription opportunities were hidden within the interface.
Research & Key Insights
To understand how music platforms convert users to paid tiers, I conducted:
Competitive analysis of Spotify, YouTube Music, and JioSaavn
Secondary research on Gen Z spending behavior
Behavioral analysis of subscription fatigue
Several important patterns emerged.
#1 Insight - Subscription Fatigue
Gen Z users are cautious about recurring payments and prefer flexible or short-term access models.
#2 Insight - Transparency Builds Trust
Users respond better to clear communication about pricing and limitations rather than hidden restrictions.
#3 Insight - Context Matters
Upgrade prompts are more effective when they appear at the moment a user wants a premium feature, rather than as generic banners.

Design Strategy
Based on the research, the redesign focused on three principles.
Transparent Monetization
Clearly communicate what users gain from premium features and what limitations exist in the free version.
Contextual Upgrade Triggers
Introduce upgrade opportunities when users attempt to access locked features such as high-quality audio or offline playback.
Low-Commitment Entry
Instead of forcing long subscriptions, introduce a 7-day premium pass that allows users to experience premium features without a long-term commitment.
Key Features
Design Process
The design process focused on balancing monetization with user experience.
User Flow
I mapped the conversion journey to identify three key moments where upgrade prompts could appear:
During onboarding
When accessing premium features
While browsing playlists

Wireframes
Mid-fidelity wireframes helped explore how premium prompts could be integrated without disrupting the music experience.
Special attention was given to:
the placement of upgrade prompts
the visibility of locked content
the checkout experience

Usability Testing
Two rounds of usability testing helped refine the experience.
Round 1 Insights
Users were confused by certain visual cues and subscription messaging.
Key improvements included:
replacing the lock icon with a crown symbol
redesigning the onboarding upgrade prompt
improving clarity around subscription plans
Round 2 Insights
The second round focused on small friction points during the conversion journey.
Key improvements included:
adding pricing context directly on upgrade buttons
replacing technical terms like “Lossless Audio” with clearer language
updating navigation after purchase to reflect premium status

Outcome
The redesigned experience introduces a transparent and contextual monetization system that aligns with how Gen Z users prefer to spend money.
Instead of forcing upgrades through frustration, the new design encourages users to upgrade through clarity, trust, and contextual value.

Reflection
This project taught me that monetization design is not just about increasing revenue — it’s about building trust with users.
By focusing on transparency and contextual value, it’s possible to design a premium experience that feels like a service rather than a restriction,
Next Improvements
With more time, the product could evolve further through features such as:
AI-generated mood playlists
exclusive artist content for premium users
cross-device listening experiences
These improvements would help strengthen the value of the premium offering.
